I am from the USA and was just surfing the internet and found it quite interesting that there is actually a town with my last name. Although I haven't researched my family tree to see if indeed my fore fathers immigrated to the USA from England. I just turned 50 and my grandfather on my dad's side passed away while I was a young lad about 10 or so. I really don't remember him having any kind of an accent. But, then at that age you really don't notice any thing except play time. Take care

A question I know St. Philip & St. James, Groby, was referred to as a Chapel of Ease and I believe when Rev. Peter Blackman was the vicar of Ratby and Groby he campaigned in the 1980's to get the status of the Chapel changed, can anyone help me with my question please. Also, before the status changed was the name just Chapel of Ease and or St. Philip & St. James, Chapel of Ease.

A very interesting and well designed website.

I look forward to your replies

I don't feel I'm groby born and bred but the years I had there are well remembered from the late 60's to when I left for Austalia.

I hav e so many fond and treasured recollections of the five years I lived in Groby as an evacuee in WW2 with my second family the Burdetts on Markfield Road. After the war ended we continued to have a very close relationship and visited my Aunty Amy Sedgeley frequently. Since her death in 2002 I miss visiting Groby but it isd often in my thoughts. An idyllsic childhood!

hello,

I watched the program about groby Old Hall on Time Team on Sunday. Please could you tell where I have seen the property on TV before. The red tower is very distinctive. I thought possibly Grand designs but I have done a Google search and can't find anything. I contacted C4 who suggested I contact you direct.

If were are ever in the area we will certainly pay the village a visit as it looks very historic and just our kind of place.

Hi ,just spent a very enjoyable couple of hours reading all about Groby on your wonderful web sight. My wife Margaret and I used to live in Groby between 1974 & 1986, 11 Elsalene Drive (at the traffic lights A50) where our two sons were born. Unfortunately the house is no longer there , knocked down to make an entrance to build more houses. We spent many hours walking around the fields at the back of the quarry leading to Bradgate park, even had our wedding reception at the Stanford Arms ,wonderful memories,

I was born in Narborough and moved to Groby in my first week of life. Lived there with my parents Cyril and Louisa Burdett at Eastleigh, The Rookery. I attended Groby Primary School and then to Broomleys Technical Secondary School, Colville. My father was the General Foreman at Groby Granite up until 1947. I married Gordon Frederick Peach in August 1951 and will celebrate our 60th wedding anniversary in 2011. We have one son Paul Gordon Peach who lives in Melbourne, Australia. My sister was Betty Burdett and she married Tom Ford in 1948. My Aunt Amy Sedgley (nee Burdett) was the village newsagent for many years. Her and her husband lived at 11 Markfield Road, Groby. Prior to the end of the First World War one end of the house was a fish shop and it closed during the Second World War because they couldn't get any fish.

I have just found your wonderful site about Groby. It has brought back many memories especially concerning Groby Lodge Farm.

My father Adrain was Mr Tweddles farm foreman for many years until he retired.

I am glad I have not been back to the farm as i could not bear the thought of the chestnut trees being chopped down I spent many an hour getting the conkers from them.

The place must be dead with no animals Regards D Hawksworth

This is a brilliant site! I am amazed and very interested in all the history captured on here - I know it comes in very handy for children doing project work for school!!

I am interested in tracing the history of the schools in the area, particularly the original Groby (Council?) School and Martinshaw Primary School which I am given to understand was part of the original school, even though it was in a different location.

I would be very grateful for any information anyone can give me, either via the above email address or via Martinshaw Primary School, Forest View, Groby, LE6 0BB.

I have seen a nice and quite place close to my mother's house being devastated in less than a year by a "travellers transit camp". The 30 caravan space has been filled in no time and another 50ish caravans installed themselve in the surroundings.

Then came noise, problems at school (inside and outside) with the "travellers", theft, price of the houses going -20% while both car and house insurance both rocketting for no other apparent reason. Gents, we have to gather and fight to save our nice and quite village, should any caravan arrive on site, we are all doomed !

I still love visiting this clever website. I particularly enjoy the local tidbits of news you have begun to include. I first visited this site in 2005. In 2006 I married a charming man from Groby and took him away! We live in the States and will be celebrating our 2nd anniversary this year on 03/06/08.

I am currently researching Castles, and their wider settlements, in Leicestershire and East Anglia as part of my MA dissertation.

Groby is of particular interest to me due to it's long tradition of occupation (Roman, Saxon etc). However, Leicestershire, in comparison to the counties of East Anglia, is relatively under studied and so any information that anybody could give me on the village, especially its castle, would be a great help.

My father was Stanley David Chamberlain, youngest son of Jesse and Margaret Chamberlain who lived in Groby in the 1920s. Jesse was gardener at Grey Lodge for many years and my father was born there (the family lived in a detached house in the grounds which I recall visiting in the 1970s). Later, the Chamberlains ran a shop in the centre of Groby, Margaret lived in a cottage near the church and my father Stanley was church verger. He was also groundsman at Groby Pool and Pool house when it was owned by the Everard family. Most of the family's remains lie in the church.

I believe Jesse, originally from Graveley near Huntingdon, was chairman of the council for some time around 1920. He had 6 sons including Fred, Percy, Charlie and Frank.

I wonder if anyone has any further information about the Chamberlains in Groby.

Lived in Groby until 1974 when I was 7 in 8 Jonathan Close. Attended Elizabeth Woodville Primary School and moved to Germany with my mother. A few countries around the world later, I finally emigrated to New Zealand three years ago where I recently qualified as a secondary school mathematics teacher! Nice to see Groby on the web - I have fond memories of the place and many of my family still live in Leicester. I always spend as much time as I can there whenever I visit the UK.

Hello

My aunt was interested in geneology, and traced our ancestry, and lo and behold, we are descended from Elizabeth (Woodville) Gray. I am a member of the Richard III Society in Sydney, Australia, and am doing some research on Elizabeth her life and times. I have also discovered the Elizabeth Woodville Primary School. I will be coming back to your site often, have read quite a bit, but I dont want to be too greedy and take too much at a time.

Thanks to your web site the nanny who used to look after the 2 children of Richard and Kate Burrows from Old Hall Farm contacted me and I in turn found where the Burrows now live and was able to put them in contact with one another. I myself have spoken with Mrs Burrows and all is well with them. But I am still trying to find John Freestone who worked also on the farm in the early 60s. Anyone can contact me on 01257 260067. Best wishes Carol Hooper.

I don't know if anyone remembers us but we used to live in Jonathon Close until 1983. Don't remember a ghost at 3 Jonathon Close only a lot of spirits on a Sunday afternoon!

I was looking on your site for OLD HALL FARM to see if it still existed and could not believe that Richard Burrows retired from it in the year 2000. As a young girl of 16 in 1960 I courted a farmer namely JOHN FREESTON who worked for Richard and his very attractive wife (can't remember her name though) John and I used to baysit there 1st baby the burrows were doing the old hall up at the time and I remember the wife having bright red carpet along the passages upstairs with gold lacquered chairs placed every so often along the landings it was looking very regal. I remember the dance she held in the hall itself that John and I were invited too, I have lot's of lovely memories of the farm. I would appreciate anyone who could help me get in touch with the Burrows family and anyone who new of the farmer John. Is the little shop still there in between the farm cottages across the way from the farm. One of the cottages John lived in (they were so tiny but very cosy). I would dearly love to here from anyone who can help me in my quest. My home telephone no is 01257 260067.

Can anyone help me trace my ancestors, the Spencer Family who were all born in Groby. The information I have is as follows although the date of birth could vary by about a year:

My granddad name was Charles Spencer born April 1900. His Parents (my Great Grandparents) were James (born 1860) and Priscilla (born 1871) and I believe her maiden name was Spencer. My granddads brothers & sisters are Earl W, Edith, James H, John W, Walter, Herbert, George, Ida & Kathleen. I believe they lived on Ratby Road. My Great Grandad James, his brothers and sisters were William, Sarah, Mary & Tom. My Great Grandmother Priscilla brothers & sisters were Sarah E, Joseph L, Arthur, Charles G, Annie E, Edith, William H. Their parents names (my great great grandparents) William (born 1847) & Edith (born 1851). My great great granddad Williams parents were William (born 1812) & Barbara.

All this information I got by searching on the internet. I am looking for any information which would help me see how my ancestors lived, what they did for a living, any other children, when they died etc.

All were born in Groby. It would be wonderful to have anymore information.

Many Thanks
