Attempted Cash Machine Scam in Hinckley Town Centre (Leicestershire Police)
Hinckley Neighbourhood Team officers would like to make people visiting Hinckley aware of a recent incident.A scam device was located on a ATM at a bank in Hinckley Town Centre on the evening of the 8th of May 2022.The device was designed to make the user of the ATM believe that their money has not been dispensed. Fortunately the person using the ATM has noticed the device and called the Police The scam device was approximately 8 to 10 inches long, grey in colour matching the colour of the ATM and was fitted close to where the money is usually dispensed from.If you believe that the ATM you are using has been tampered with and the bank is open please make the bank aware immediately. If the bank is not open please contact the Police on 101.Here are some handy tips to help avoid ATM fraud Always carefully cover your PIN from hidden cameras or prying eyes whenever you use your cardDo not keep a written record of your PINNever tell anyone else your PIN or allow anyone to use your cardDon’t choose a PIN that someone could easily guess, like your date of birthStore the 24 hour emergency contact number for all of your cards in your mobile phone or anywhere that’s easy to accessIf your card is not returned to you by an ATM after use or the money not issued to you, call your card issuer immediately. If possible whilst at, or near, the machineIf you happen to notice anything unusual or suspicious about an ATM, do not use it and report it to the bank or cash machine operatorCheck your statements regularly. if you spot anything suspicious, report it to your bank straight awayWhen using an ATM, make sure that look out for people close by who may be trying to distract you in order to steal your card or pin
